Your assigned reading today is the transcript of a recent seminar/interview given by William Goldman at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. You'll find it on the Writers Guild of America site, but you'll have to scroll down the page front and click the link. (I can't link to it directly because of wga.org's framing. Goldman's first book, Adventures in the Screen Trade, is recommended reading, though Sidney Lumet's Making Movies is a better overall read, and more enlightening for a general reader.
