Writing Discipline
I started writing script pages on the Ice Horror project today. Although the outline may change once Charlie weighs in the latest version, I have resolved to write three hours or ten pages ó whichever comes first ó every weekday until the first draft is done.
It will be a difficult resolution to keep. On one hand, working on something for three hours a day seems laughably easy when you think in terms of a forty (or fifty, or sixty) hour work week. It barely registers as part time. On the other hand, think about how much of your full-time work day you spend at less than full productivity: surfing the web, chatting with co-workers, making coffee, making personal phone calls. Or think about how much of your full-time work day is spent less than fully engaged: answering e-mails, sitting in meetings, doing administrative make-work. Writing pages is hard, and it's all you.
So we'll see how it goes. If I can keep it up, I'll be rewarded with a full draft by the first or second week of March. And that'll be a huge reward; all the worst, hardest parts of the process will be over, with all the enjoyable parts to come. Wish me luck.
