Welcome to Mortification, Population: Us

When Stacey and I arrived at our hotel in Seattle last night there was a message to call our neighbor, Regina, who had kindheartedly agreed to watch Abby while we were gone. Although it was past midnight, Regina's not one to call for nothing, so we phoned her right away. In addition to dog-sitting Abby, Regina is watching two dogs belonging to other friends of hers, and she told us that Abby had bitten one of those two right between the eyes. We were (and are) completely mortified. I imagine the feeling is akin to the police bringing one's high school student home drunk out of his mind.

Abby has never done anything like that to another dog before, gets along with the other dogs at the dog park, and Urban Dog has never reported any problems while she's been boarded with them. At Urban Dog they keep her in the pen with the small and timid dogs, for Pete's sake!

The dog she bit had to have stitches (which we plan to pay for, of course) and Abby had to be returned to our house. Regina reported this morning that Abby seems to be doing OK over there by herself. She says she'll stop in a few times a day to let her our and to give her some walks. When the other two dogs go home on Saturday, she says she'll probably bring Abby back over to her house.

Although mortified, we're so grateful that Regina (who has a dog of her own, Lucy, with whom Abby gets along) has been so understanding, kind, and level-headed. We are hugely in her debt.
