Vanguard
I found out last week — and it has now been publically announced — that Pieces of Eight has won an Origins Vanguard Award for being innovative and unique among games released in 2006. Yay!
Although the Origins Awards have their share of procedural issues from year to year, it's nice to see Po8 recognized. And it's another reason (other than free cheese) to look forward to the OA award ceremony at Origins next week!

Congratulations! (and have a great time at Origins)
Congratulations! We saw the news when it hit Gaming Report (I think it was Gaming Report). Any idea why they announced the Vanguard Award in advance of the con instead of at the Big Important Ceremony?
(I have to admit up front here that I'm no longer paying any attention to the Origins Awards since the fiasco of shouting out the winners from in front of the dealer's hall doors and so don't know if there's even a Big Important Ceremony anymore ... this should not be read to imply that I do not think Pieces of Eight isn't a swell and innovative game, deserving of recognition.)

In a word, no, no idea at all. My best guess (and if this is why they did it, I don't think it's a bad idea) is that they want to use the announcement to draw attention to the fact that there will be balloting at Origins for the main awards, and that those main awards will in fact be given out there based on said balloting.

There was a Big Important Ceremony last year that went off with moderate decorum. I presume it will be more or less the same this year. (At any rate, it happens in the evening on Saturday, so if they're planning on howling it out to the crowd, they'll have to find a different assemblage.)
Sniftiness! Congrats!
That's awesome, congrats!
Sweet! Bravo. And, may I say, well deserved.
Is the term Pieces of Eight widely known in literature or gaming circles that I'm not aware of? It's weird that Pirates III also had the Nine Pieces of Eight as a major storyline in this year's blockbuster is it not?
Oh, and congrats!
What great recognition! Hope the ceremony, etc. is fun.
Jesse, I had the same question awhile back, here is a wikipedia link about the term:

This comes as no surprise. It's a great game, and innovative above that. To me, in all my selfishness, though, the actual good news in your post is that you seem to be coming to Origins.
