Trilogy Tuesday

As I mentioned, on Tuesday I went to consecutive screenings of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The first two were shown in their extended editions for a total of about eleven hours of seat time. Although there was much questioning and gnashing of teeth beforehand in light of our far front and far left seats and having seen tickets going on ebay for about two hundred bucks, the endurance portion of the event was a non-starter. I started to get a slight neck crick about half way through The Two Towers, but it never got worse. In fact, by the time The Return of the King must have been about halfway over, it seemed to me that it had only started thirty minutes ago.

Jer had the opportunity to be That Guy twice. He had worn his cloak to conceal the backpack of drink and goodies he smuggled in under it, but as there was a relative dearth of full-on costume-folk attending, both CNN and ABC interviewers thrust cameras and microphones at him for his commentary on the occasion.

At the end of the night all were gifted by New Line and Sideshow WETA with commemorative resin desk tchotchkes, each having a frame of film from each of the three movies embedded in them.

Overall, it was an electric occasion of high geekery. I've been known to avoid such events in the past because I've noticed that one of the greatest social crimes going is to break the detached veneer that proves you don't care about anything. It sucks, but I'm frequently guilty. In this case, I'm so very glad that I didn't succumb.
