The Rock in 25 Words or Less

A genre standout; the single case where Bay's detractors must STFU. In concept, characters, plotting, scenes, and even humor, even the bad's good. Grade: A

I will not STFU. This movie stank when it came out, IMO, and it stinks worse now (even the "Zeus' butthole" line hasn't aged well). And as a screenwriter: aagghhh!! Characters do things out of the slimmest of motivations. The Connery escape sequence is an obvious action set-piece bolt on. The way they try to redeem Ed Harris is completely absurd. And the bits of Sorkin dialogue that pop up every now and again are even more aggravating because they are far too literate for such a dumb blow-em-up movie.

Still, we all have our fast-food pleasures and should be entitled to them. I, for instance, still have a soft spot in my heart for THE ARRIVAL and GHOSTS OF MARS.
