San Francisco Pending

Stacey and I are headed to San Francisco on Thursday (returning Sunday) for an extended weekend of relaxation. We'll be staying at the Hotel Triton, two blocks from Union Square, and plan to spend most of our time in those general environs. We're obviously very excited to get out of town and engage in some hardcore relaxation, and we'd love to hear your considered suggestions about the best venues for eating, drinking, and observing sights in the area.

What say you, denizens of jefftidballdotcomland?

How much time have you spent in SF? There are all the classic things to do (Coit Tower, Lombard street, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Warf, and so on) but once you have done them, why do them again unlkess you loved them ... and then what do you need us for?

I like wandering in SF and people watching (but that's just me). I make an effort to go see a baseball game in SF every time I am there, because SBC is one of the nicest parks in the nation.

Back in the day I used to like picnicing inthe Japanese Tea garden with my family, but that was like 30 years ago.

No current hot spots or anythig though, sorry.

He who goes to San Francisco without going to San Francisco's Chinatown has not been to San Francisco. Go and eat something you can't pronounce, then leave an orange at a Buddhist shrine to appease the spirits on your trip.

I liked playing with the seals at Fisherman's Wharf, but heartily recommend you head out to Berkeley, too, and eat someplace local.

Golden Gate park is great, of course, but you could do worse than to drive out into Marin County and run up Lucas Valley road in the wine country; you'll get a great cross-section of deep woods and gorgeous coastal hills. Recommended.

I love SF.

Jen and I stayed at the Triton a few times and it is great. I'm partial to the Jerry Garcia sweet myself. There is a great pub with dj's spinning not more then two blocks away called the....top of the tunnel....or the tunnel top. Very cool scene. Also, if you want some sweet ass greesy breakfast food- Dotties in the tenderloin is a quick cab ride (or pleasant walk) away. Have a great weekend!

The Pork Store on Haight is even better for greezy breakfast food. Plan on standing in line though. My brother is a local and he still eats there, so it's not just touristy.

If you do Alcatraz, go at night! It's very cool, a little less crowded, and talk to the night guard and ask him if he's ever seen any ghosts. If it's the same one still from when I went a few years ago, he has some stories...

Go drink coffee in Castro for excellent people watching.

And Pac Bell is awesome, so you defintely should hit a Giants game if you get a chance! Have fun, I'm jealous.

I would've had the suggestion of a great Japanese place in a few blocks off Market Street, but I recently found out the owners retired and moved back to Japan. Umm... there's a couple of Mel's Diners surrounding Moscone Center. *sigh* Just not the same, really.

If you do head over to Berkeley, I heartily recommend La Mediterranee (at Ashby and College). The brunch "sampler platter" is outstanding. Been addicted to it for a while now. :-)

I remember this awesome music store that sold primarily soul music. After hours on Saturday they push aside all the music racks and have this crazy dance party. It was really nice and absoutely with out pretense. Everyone there eventually cut loose and burned up the carpet. I can get the name if you think that is your thing.
