Proof That the RIAA is Full of Shit

The Register reports that two professors' statistical analysis has debunked the recording industry's claims that plummeting CD sales have been caused by file downloading. According to their research:

"[I]t takes on average 5000 downloads to reduce album sales by just a single copy — and that, they say, is a worst-case scenario."
This doesn't answer the moral question — whether it is or should be legal to offer other people's intellectual property for public consumption without their permission — but it does demonstrate that the RIAA's Chicken Little howling is and has been beside the point.
