Panther is Our Precious
Some months ago ó as much as a year, perhaps ó I was debating the upgrade from Mac OS 10.2 (Panther) to 10.3 (Jaguar). I was holding off because Panther was working fine for me, and I'd heard rumors of grim problems like data wiping with the upgrade process. Last week I was essentially forced to go through with the upgrade to make my new Airport card work properly and to be able to use the most recent version of Java, which was required by the software tool I'm currently using at Tomo.
I report all of this because I remember someone else was facing the same upgrade dilemma, and had requested a report if I ever went through with it. The verdict: I wish I had upgraded a long time ago. If you're still running 10.2, you should strongly consider making the switch. And if you don't have wireless networking on your laptop yet, get it. The price has come way down, and the ability to just pick up your computer and go to the other room with it, with no network interruptions, is both absolutely remarkable and more genuinely useful than you might think.
