Live-Action Magic Number Puzzle
You have heard, one way or another, that Stacey and I are having a baby. (Or, if not, you have now.) Last weekend marked the official start of "nesting," the period during which we array our house with twigs and soft fluffy things found on the ground that we carry inside in our mouths.
I'll be here all week. Please tip your servers.
Last weekend marked the beginning of the Great Migration of Furniture and Belongings. This migration will culminate in the clearing of our second bedroom (herinafter, "Office") for use by our child (codename: TEASPOON) in doing, you know, whatever he or she wants.
The migration began with the rental of a storage locker, advertised as 5' x 5' but in fact slightly smaller. (Laugh it up Dungeon Master, but I defy you to find an orc in Los Angeles who can afford to live in a 10' x 10' room.) Storage locker secured, it was off to Ikea, to purchase shelves with which to fill it, and then back to the storage locker, to assemble said shelves.
The ultimate point of the Storage Locker and Shelving Plan (hereinafter, "Mad Scheme") is to clear the storage room at the back of the garage (hereinafter, "Garage Room"). This will allow us to move my desk (codename: JERKER), and all and sundry else from the Office (thereabovebefore, "Second Bedroom") out into the Garage Room. At that point said room will probably get a better name, perhaps something like, "If you want your office inside the house you'd best sell one of those scripts, then, hadn't you?"
In any case, once all of that is done, we can get about the business of buying a crib. My understanding is that the baby will not come out until there is a crib.
So you see, our entire house has become a giant live-action magic number puzzle. You know the kind, where there's only one empty space (which you have to rent), and everything else must wait its turn to move to the place where it wants to be in the long run until it gets to use the empty space.
But you know what? It's all good. Because games — even magic number puzzles — are awesome. And that goes double when the prize for playing the magic number puzzle is your very own miniature little person.
