I was thanked and excused

I was thanked and excused this morning, after being assigned to a pool of potential jurors last Friday for a case that went into jury selection today. I was eliminated from consideration by a peremptory challenge from the plaintiff's attorney, who (I'm guessing) preferred not to allow the spouse of a former big-firm attorney onto a jury that would decide the legal malpractice suit her client was bringing. Fair enough.

In any case, I was excited to have the opportunity to participate and it was something of a let-down to be excused. Although I went in on Friday a bit grumbly at having to skip work and writing, the civic pep talks from the jury coordinators and one judge who came in to say a few words to the juror pool made me seriously consider the importance of juries drawn from among the general populace, and the need for people to serve on them willingly and gladly. It isn't as though I'd suffer any real hardship — financial or otherwise — by serving for even as long as a month.

Los Angeles County Jury Fun Fact: Los Angeles country goes through 10,000 potential jurors every day.
