I play my music too
I play my music too loud while I'm working in the basement, so I'm lucky for the CD-standard two second breaks between songs. The break between tracks 17 ("serious") and 18 ("skin trade") allowed me to hear the noise coming from upstairs. Which turned out to be water dripping from the middle of the living room ceiling onto the floor behind the couch. Dripping so fast it was almost just a steady pour, in fact.
So I turned off the water to the house (learn how to do this at your house, if you don't already know) and called American Home Shield (get a warranty on your house, if you haven't already got one). After navigating many strata of voice mail, a pleasant voice informed me that Midtown Rooting and Plumbing would call me on Monday. Although they don't want you to be able to talk to a live person, I finally got one anyway, informed her that Monday would not cut it, and got my situation upgraded to "emergency." Apparently having an "emergency" is not enough to get a plumber to your house in less than an hour (and counting), but at least turning the water off made the ceiling stop leaking after about ten minutes.
