I got the opportunity to
I got the opportunity to see the unaired two-hour pilot for Firefly last Friday night, and it was excellent. Excellent (A-) as pilots go, pretty good (B) as TV goes, and outstanding (A) as science fiction goes. I know a lot of people who are raving fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, also created by Firefly creator Joss Whedon, and while I haven't seen a lot of Buffy, this pilot was better than pretty much any of the episodes of that show I've seen. Which is to say that you Buffy fans who aren't watching Firefly should tune in.
When I watched the pilot, I had not yet seen any of the other, aired episodes. (We've got a serious Tivo backup at home. It's not pretty.) After watching the episode that they used as their premier, I've gotta wonder what the hell they were thinking about. As a regular episode, it was not bad, but as the introduction to the series, it does not compare in the slightest to the two-hour pilot. Near as I can tell, the people who made that programming call were fools.
We also watched the Birds of Prey pilot last Friday night, and it was terrible. Enough said about that experience.
