Don't Confuse Them With the Facts

The Department of Homeland Security has decided to create a mascot for the purpose of educating children about the virtues of preparedness. In keeping with the Bush administration's "don't confuse me with the facts" modus operandi, they've decided to make their mascot an American Shepherd dog.

The punchline, my friends, is this: There's no such breed.

i think it's even more fitting that they chose an actual super-nazi dog.

Apparently a number of groups have been trying to create new breeds with names that are similar to "American Shepherd." In addition to the page you link to, there's apparently a North American Shepherd breeding group who are trying to produce a miniature style German Shepherd, for example. However (a) none of those groups have named their breed the "American Shepherd" and (b) none of those new breeds are widely recognized as actual breeds by a widely respected organization such as the AKC. I stand by my "Don't confuse me with the facts" characterization.
