Disc Golfing Again

After a six-year hiatus (broken by a single partial round in Santa Barbara in 2002 or so) I'm disc golfing again, and having a great time. My game — which was never all that great — is in awful shape, but it's nice to be outside with friends, doing something relaxing.

On Friday morning, I played before work with some guys from the office, and the course claimed three of my discs: two went in the water (on separate holes), and one split in half upon hitting a metal sewer cover. I bought a pair of replacement discs at Air Traffic yesterday, but chose poorly. My replacement Stingray is too heavy, and although the Orc was a 100% name-based purchase, I'm not really loving it, either, after throwing it a few times.

But be all that as it may, it's nice to be disc golfing again.

So do you use different discs for different shots, like different clubs in golf, or must you pick one kind of disc and stick with it through the whole course? If you get to switch, is there a big market for disc golf bags with little pom-pommed sock-hats for your discs, like there is for golf?

Did you guys get that pool up and running yet? (In the rain...)

Indeed, there are many different kinds of discs for various shots — some for long drives, some for precision drives, some to turn one way, some to turn the other way, some for approach and putting, etc. There are disc golf bags, but no sock-hats, sadly.

We took the cover off the pool on Saturday just in time for the rain to begin. Current rodent count is two: one floating mouse under the cover, and then one squirrel committed suicide sometime yesterday.

After we took the cover off, we naturally realized that we had no idea what the hell we were doing, so have called professionals to come out and open everything the rest of the way up and tell us how to maintain it.

There was an ancient and well-respected 18-hole on the Rice campus that I used to enjoy. I mean, the ninth hole was right next to Valhalla, the bar run as a public service by the Graduate Student Association. How could you not love that?
