Cthulhu 500 Nominated

Here's some good news: Cthulhu 500 has been nominated for an Origins Award in the "Best Traditional Card Game or Expansion" category. Although much scorn is heaped on the Origins Awards from all corners, (a) it beats the crap out of nothing, and (b) it looks good on my resume. Happily for me, Cthulhu 500 squarely fits the mold of products commonly nominated:

  • Has popular (among gamers) subject matter, in this case the Cthulhu mythos.
  • Has an RPG connection, in this case (thought not a licensed product) to Call of Cthulhu.
  • Designer connected to the Academy in some way. (I served on its board for a year while I was at Atlas.)
  • Published by a small but widely and well-respected publisher, in this case Atlas Games.

Additional good news: It sounds like the Academy's new nomination system, which involves juries of knowledgeable designers (and others) divided into working groups, has so far been a success. In my opinion, Matt Forbeck did an admirable job assembling it while trying to satisfy all the clamoring voices involved.

Congratulations, Jeff! My son and I love it -- even though my wife has forbidden him to play it with me (I'm a sore loser).

Very exciting news, although your points don't exactly indicate that the nomination system has changed substantially.

(Actually, in other categories, the nominees seem deserving.)

The real test will be next year, assuming they don't tear up this system and replace it some other, put-together-at-the-last-minute hack job.

Hmm, my parenthetical comment contradicts my actual thinking, which is that Cthulhu 500 is an outstanding game that deserves the 2004 OA.

Huzzah! If Gen Con '04 is any indication, your chances are good. Congratulations, sir.
