And now with the wind:

And now with the wind: The night before last, at about eleven o'clock, we lost power at home. Let me tell you, it's dark in our neighborhood when all the security lights, street lights, and window lights go dark. We managed to find the Maglite in the dark closet and proceeded to light candles. The dog didn't much care for any of it, but stuck with us like a brave trooper.

There was still no power by morning. Luckily, the coffee shop at the bottom of the hill was in the power-having zone, so at least I could get a cup of Joe. A neighbor called the power company, which estimated the situation would be fixed in between one and ten hours. Not that it was — when we came home from work, all was still dark. We spent a fair amount of the evening dealing with spoiling food and melting ice in the refrigerator and freezer. The same neighbor called the power company again, which had stopped issuing estimates at all. It must really suck to answer the phone at the power company. No one calls to say, "Hey, power company! Nice job! My lights are working A-OK!"

There was still no power at bedtime, but the story ends happily: Power returned as we were falling asleep. Stacey saw the outdoor security lights come on, and rejoicing commenced.
