Al Sharpton Sharpton seems to

Al Sharpton

Sharpton seems to be running primarily to increase awareness on a few targeted issues and to increase overall voter awareness, registration, and participation.

Constitutional Amendment on Education: Sharpton supports the following House Joint Resolution: "SECTION 1. All citizens of the United States shall enjoy the right to a public education of equal high quality. SECTION 2. The Congress shall have power to implement this article by appropriate legislation." He argues that since since education is a power delegated to the states, it is currently applied in a "separate and unequal" manner, and that should be changed.

Constitutional Amendment on Health Care: Sharpton supports this House Joint Resolution as well: "SECTION 1. All citizens of the United States shall enjoy the right to health care of equal high quality. SECTION 2. The Congress shall have power to implement this article by appropriate legislation."

Constitutional Right to Vote Amendment: Sharpton notes that because "the U.S. Constitution contains no explicit right to vote" (because it "only provides for nondiscrimination in voting on the basis of race, sex, and age") that there should be a new amendment to explicitly grant the right to vote to all Americans. (His full argument on this topic is very interesting. He notes that even had Bush not prevailed in Bush v. Gore, the Florida legislatature would have been within its legal rights to ignore the popular vote of Florida's citizens and simply select its own electors.)

Whether you support Sharpton or not, his site includes a petition of support for these constitutional amendments.

Interestingly, (and I'm not sure what to make of this, if anything), Sharpton's web site has an overall graphic look that's completely different from the other candidates' sites.

Sharpton clearly has no chance of winning, and his messages aren't overly political. On the other hand, his "platform" is one that I'd endorse wholeheartedly. Interesting.
