A real wood floor is an outstanding thing. Having ripped up the carpet in the new house and refinished the hardwood underneath, both Stacey and I are very happy to have done so. Not only does real wood feel much better than carpet (or laminate, for that matter) under your feet, it looks great, even though ours is far from damage free.
A well thought out kitchen is also an outstanding thing. Although the kitchen at our condo was much larger than our new kitchen in terms of square feet of standing room, the intelligent organization of cupboards and drawers in our new kitchen is an incredible improvement. Our silverware drawer, for example, is wide enough to accomodate a divider tray. While this means I can no longer simply upend the dishwasher's silverware caddy into the drawer when putting the clean stuff away, the tradeoff is definately worth it.
